During operation Market Garden there where fierce battles between the allied forces and the Germans at practically all places along the corridor. The high point of the battle was at Arnhem where the 1st Airborne division fought itself to death in an attempt to save the operation and to hold a bridgehead on the north side of the Rhine which they thought could be reinforced by the second Army.
When the British where pulled out of Arnhem the fighting along the corridor did not stop. In the winter of 1944 the sector got more quiet with both sides entrenching themselves. In the spring of 1945 during operation Veritable the area was once again a scene of some heavy battles before the Germans where definitely pushed back.
The heavy battles in this area where very costly to the Americans an especially to the British forces that where involved. The soldiers that fell during operation Market Garden and in later operations are buried on a number of cemeteries in the areas around Arnhem, Nijmegen and Eindhoven.
